11 Keto Breads and Other Delicious Baked Goods

You Don't Have To Miss Out

Bread – a haiku.

Oh, how I love bread.
Soft and fluffy, crispy crust.
Can I have on keto?

Firstly – how about those haiku skills? Not bad for a first try.

Secondly – yes, yes you can.

Eating bread (and other delicious baked goods) is entirely possible while following a ketogenic diet. You just need to replace the standard wheat flour with keto-friendly alternatives.

As each flour and flour alternative has different properties, you can’t make a straight swap (i.e. you can’t swap out 1 cup wheat flour for 1 cup almond flour).

I suggest trying out a few ‘tried and tested’ recipes that use flour alternatives (like the ones below) to get used to working with them, before experimenting with your own combinations.

Keto-friendly flour alternatives

  • Almond flour is one of the most popular flour alternatives. One quarter cup of almond flour has 2g net carbs. A downside is that it can be quite expensive, and is not suitable for those with nut allergies.
  • Coconut flour is fast becoming another popular keto flour. It can be quite tricky to work with for beginners (it soaks up a lot of liquid), but you will get the hang of it after a while. One quarter cup of coconut flour has 7g net carbs.
  • Ground flax meal (also known as ground flaxseed or linseed) is often used as a ‘supplementary’ flour, in addition to another flour. Flaxseed is often used used as an egg replacement.
  • Sunflower seed meal is an excellent option for those with nut allergies. Sunflower seed meal has very similar properties to almond flour. It tends to be hard to find though – and quite expensive.

Keto Bread

A lot of keto bread recipes tend to have quite an eggy taste, which is off-putting for some.

This Keto Bread has almost no eggy taste once it has cooled from the oven.

It uses xantham gum as a binding agent – the way gluten would for wheat flour.
